Sustainability was central in the construction of Old Market and since it opened in 2014, it has remained a major focus. There are many cleverly hidden sustainability features throughout the mall, all of which contributed to Old Market being awarded a BREEAM Excellent rating for environmental construction and on-going developments.
Old Market employs dedicated waste operatives who manage all waste streams across the site. The operatives collect the waste from individual occupiers and weigh it accordingly, while automatic photos are taken. This is to collect information about which occupiers are recycling well, and which are struggling – who needs further recycling training and who doesn’t. The aim of this advanced technological waste strategy is to ensure recycling is happening to its full capacity.
Furthermore, at Old Market we are always looking for more ways to improve our carbon footprint; how best to reduce our environmental impact. One of our solutions is to offer an annual school event to provide recycling training to the students, showing them around our facilities and the on-site equipment.
Old Market also sells its reusable pallets, the money from which is donated to a local charity of our choice. When it comes to the mall’s water use, we also use little tricks to make it more sustainable – the water from the scrubber drier, for example, is used to water the centre’s plants. In addition to this, during our monthly meetings, we encourage our retailers to donate unwanted stock for the benefit of others.
We think it is these small changes that, when added up, can make all the difference to the overall waste output of the centre.
