In June this year, over 250 pupils from Riverside Primary, St. Martin’s Primary and Withington Primary, took part in three literacy-focused events. The project was funded by the National Literacy Trust, and aimed to encourage children to read during their spare time, inspiring better literacy skills within the classroom. The children were taught how to choose books they might enjoy, after which they got to pick out three books to take home for free.
The event culminated in Old Market, where the pupils took part in an array of creative and literacy focused activities. This included a storytelling session in the Odeon cinema, a cookie decorating class and a tour of the centre’s on-site recycling process. The project was a great success and received several pieces of positive feedback from the schools involved.
We look forward to running more literacy events, and hope our young visitors keep up the good work at home and in the classroom!
